Bass Brigades 2016
2016 marked the 11th annual Bass Brigade camp, held at Warren Ranch. If haven’t heard about Bass Brigade, it’s a youth leadership and conservation camp that focuses on largemouth bass. Cadet’s experience some long days, one of the instructors said it felt like boot camp. Cadets were introduced to many techniques professional fisheries biologist use in managing natural resources. They learned how to sample fish populations via electrofishing, trapping, and seining. Cadets learned identification of aquatic plants, aquatic invertebrates, and fish specific to Texas. They learned about tagging, culling, anatomy, watershed, and writing a lake management plan.

Well you just can’t keep kids inside all day, outside of the classroom cadets learned fly tying and casting. Additionally cadets polished their public speaking, interviewing, and debate techniques. Finally after all the bookwork, power points, and team working, the cadets challenge professional angler Gary Klein to a fishing tournament.
5 Scholarships were awarded to outstanding cadets that went above and beyond in promoting Texas Brigades and Bass Brigade in their communities through presentations and attending different community events.
A camp isn’t a camp without competition; the cadets are split onto “schools” competing for top school. Rod and reel combos were given to Top Cadet, the winners of the pitching/casting/flipping competition. Cadets who had the top trifold, top fly, or notebook received gift cards and other gear from local outdoors companies.
